Abstract

The new BeFiS process for filtration of beer is described; this process uses kieselgur in centrifugal horizontal filter, and features integrated regeneration of the filter aid. Regeneration may be chemical, enzymatic or a combined process. Silica gel or PVPP haze stabilization treatments may be applied during filtration. Practical experience with use of this process for filtration of beer ar the Altenburger brewery in Germany are reported. Filtration performance and the microbiological quality and ageing properties of the filtered beer are considered, together with compliance with the German Beer Purity Law, environmental benefits and costs.
