Research in the department includes developing processes for the microbial production of bio-based chemicals. One innovation focus is on microbial tensides based on renewable raw materials.

For academic research, there are new challenges that arise regarding bioeconomy. If biotechnological processes are to make a significant contribution to the success of the energy and raw materials revolution, then in the future they must be at least equal to or even better than chemical processes. Only then will they be able to largely replace products that have up to now been based on petrochemicals.
